Shopify reports AI-driven traffic and orders to its merchant stores tripled year over year, pushing back on fears that AI search cannibalizes commerce the way it has publishing.
Shopify says AI search engines are sending more shoppers, and more sales, to its merchant storefronts rather than replacing them. The company reported that AI-driven traffic and orders tripled year over year in Q2, a sharp contrast to the traffic collapse many publishers have reported since AI answer engines and chat interfaces became mainstream.
The distinction Shopify is drawing matters: unlike content sites that lose clicks when an AI assistant summarizes an article, product discovery through AI tools appears to still route buyers to a purchase page rather than resolving the query entirely inside the chat window.
This is the clearest data point yet that AI search is additive for transactional commerce even as it guts referral traffic for media. Retailers and DTC brands should treat AI-surface optimization as a new acquisition channel, not a threat to defend against.
