SpaceX has officially closed its acquisition of Cursor, the AI coding assistant startup, folding the company fully into Elon Musk's rocket and satellite business. The deal brings an agentic coding tool inside an engineering-heavy organization that builds hardware, software, and mission-critical systems at scale.
Cursor had built a strong following among developers for its AI-assisted code editing and agent workflows, competing directly with GitHub Copilot and other coding copilots. Its absorption into SpaceX signals a shift from independent SaaS coding tool to internal infrastructure for a single large enterprise.
Coding agents are becoming strategic enough that hardware companies want to own them outright rather than license them — a sign the AI coding tool market is bifurcating into acquired-and-internalized versus independent platform plays.
