The story

A 10-year national plan, with Samsung and SK Hynix alone set to put $518B toward new fabrication sites.

South Korea has announced an $880 billion, 10-year investment plan spanning semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and robotics. Within it, Samsung and SK Hynix are set to commit roughly $518 billion toward new chip-fabrication capacity.

Numbers at this scale are industrial policy, not corporate capex. They reflect a view that leadership in AI now runs through control of the memory and compute supply chain, not just the models on top of it.

Why it matters

Industrial policy is becoming AI strategy. When a nation underwrites half a trillion dollars of fabs, the compute-and-memory bottleneck turns geopolitical, and pricing power accrues to whoever actually builds. Watch supply, not demos.
