Shopify is expanding WebMCP support to checkout, letting browser-based AI agents modify order details and complete transactions once a buyer authorizes the action. This closes the loop on agentic shopping, which previously stopped short of payment.
The move puts Shopify ahead of rivals in defining how agent-driven commerce actually settles a transaction, a question retailers and payment processors have been circling without resolving.
Whoever controls the checkout protocol for AI agents controls a chokepoint in future e-commerce, and Shopify just staked its claim. Merchants building for agentic buyers now have a live standard to build against rather than waiting on a hypothetical spec.
