Two more news organizations sued OpenAI and Microsoft over alleged unauthorized use of journalism to train AI models, as Microsoft separately disputes copyright claims in court filings.
The Seattle Times and Newsday joined a growing list of publishers suing OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging their journalism was used without permission to train AI systems. The suits add to mounting legal pressure on both companies over training data provenance.
In a separate filing, Microsoft told a court that Copilot 'virtually never' reproduces substantive chunks of New York Times articles, pushing back directly on claims that its chatbot substitutes for original journalism.
Every new publisher lawsuit narrows the legal room labs have to claim fair use by default, and Microsoft's counter-filing shows the litigation is now a data fight, not just a headline fight. Media companies and AI vendors alike need licensing strategies now, before courts set precedent for them.
