Global PC shipments fell 20.1%, the steepest decline in years, raising doubts about whether the AI PC refresh cycle can offset weak demand.
PC shipments dropped 20.1% in the latest tracking period, described as the sharpest decline since Q1 2023. Analysts warned the slide may mark the start of a new downward cycle rather than a one-off dip.
The decline comes as chipmakers have leaned heavily on AI-capable PCs and new silicon, including Nvidia's recently launched RTX Spark laptops, to justify a hardware upgrade wave.
The AI PC narrative was supposed to drive a device refresh cycle for OEMs and chipmakers; a 20% shipment drop is a direct test of that thesis. Hardware and infrastructure leaders should watch whether AI features actually move purchasing decisions or remain a marketing layer.
