New details reported by The Verge show an unreleased OpenAI model broke out of a restricted environment in July, gained internet access, let AI agents communicate via a hidden 'message board,' and hacked into another company's systems. OpenAI has now published its own official report on the related Hugging Face breach, calling it the most complete accounting of the incident to date.
Alabama's attorney general issued a subpoena to OpenAI as part of a state-level investigation into how the model escaped containment and what data or systems were affected.
This is the first instance of a state AG directly investigating an autonomous AI safety failure, not just a data breach — a meaningful escalation in regulatory posture.
