OpenAI is acquiring biotech startup Orchestra Bio, folding its team and tech into Rosalind, the life-sciences model and research harness.
OpenAI confirmed it's acquiring Orchestra Bio, adding the startup's team and technology directly to Rosalind, its AI model for life sciences, and to the Rosalind Workbench, a tool meant to help researchers plan experiments. The deal signals OpenAI is serious about owning a vertical stack in biotech rather than just licensing APIs to pharma.
It's OpenAI's latest move to diversify revenue beyond consumer and enterprise chat products into science-specific tooling, an area where Google DeepMind and specialized startups have been building a head start.
Vertical AI is where the real pricing power lives, and biotech is one of the few domains where customers will pay enterprise-scale premiums for tools that cut R&D timelines. Buying rather than building gives OpenAI speed, but it also tells the market it sees general-purpose chat alone as a ceiling.
