OpenAI acquires the Apple Portrait Mode team's startup, signaling a hardware push beyond software models.
OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a smartphone camera technology startup founded by former Apple engineers who led development of Portrait Mode, in a deal reported at $300 million.
The acquisition gives OpenAI in-house optics and imaging expertise, deepening speculation about a consumer hardware device following its earlier moves into devices and its partnership with former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
This is OpenAI buying distribution and differentiation, not just talent. Owning camera IP signals a bet that the next AI interface is a physical device, not a chat window, and puts OpenAI on a collision course with Apple and Google on hardware turf.
