Nvidia Moves To Acquire Hugging Face For $13B

The story

The chipmaker is reportedly in talks to buy the open-source AI model hub, extending its reach from silicon into the developer layer.

Nvidia is negotiating to acquire Hugging Face for roughly $13 billion, according to a Business Insider report circulating on Hacker News. Hugging Face has become the default distribution point for open-source models, datasets, and inference tooling used across the industry.

The talks surface in the same week OpenAI published its full accounting of a cybersecurity breach tied to Hugging Face infrastructure, and after Alabama's attorney general subpoenaed OpenAI over the incident. That timing puts fresh scrutiny on how much of the AI stack now runs through a single hub.

Why it matters

If it closes, Nvidia would own critical infrastructure at both ends of the AI stack — the chips that train models and the platform that distributes them. That concentration raises supply-chain and antitrust questions for every enterprise that depends on Hugging Face to ship models.
