The Times and other publishers allege Brave scraped copyrighted content and fed it to AI customers including Anthropic and Perplexity.
The New York Times and a group of other publications filed suit against Brave, the privacy-focused browser company, alleging it unlawfully scraped copyrighted content and distributed it to AI customers such as Anthropic and Perplexity, while also letting users bypass publisher paywalls. The suit extends the legal front publishers have opened against AI data pipelines beyond the labs themselves to the infrastructure layer that feeds them.
It follows a pattern of publishers targeting any company in the content-to-AI supply chain, not just the model makers.
This widens AI copyright liability beyond foundation model companies to browsers, aggregators, and any intermediary touching scraped content. Any company building products on top of AI-sourced data should audit its upstream data suppliers now, before becoming the next name on a complaint.
