Meta's new AI agent Muse has outperformed ChatGPT's early mobile adoption curve in North America, per third-party estimates. The launch came with Meta's existing distribution advantage across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, giving Muse a built-in funnel ChatGPT didn't have at its own launch.
The strong start arrives the same week Amazon shut Muse out of shopping on its platform, showing that download momentum doesn't guarantee commerce access.
Distribution, not model quality, decided this round — Meta's install base gave Muse a head start that no independent AI lab can easily replicate. But fast downloads mean little if agents get walled off from the retailers and platforms they need to actually transact on behalf of users.
