The story

After Washington requested early access and added oversight, OpenAI ships its GPT-5.6 line — with Sol tuned for biology, chemistry, and cybersecurity.

OpenAI has publicly released its GPT-5.6 family — Sol, Terra, and Luna — after a delay in which the US government requested early access and additional oversight before broad availability. Sol is the strongest of the three, tuned for work in biology, chemistry, and cybersecurity.

The staggered, government-in-the-loop rollout is as notable as the models. A frontier lab gating its top model on state review, and tuning it for dual-use science, is not a product launch in the old sense. It is closer to how a defense-adjacent capability ships.

Why it matters

When the strongest model is gated on government oversight and tuned for dual-use science, frontier AI has crossed into national infrastructure. Enterprise buyers should expect capability and compliance to arrive as a bundle — and plan procurement accordingly.
