Google Home now ships an MCP server letting Claude, ChatGPT, and other agents control connected devices and read camera summaries via natural language.
Google is launching early access to a Model Context Protocol server for Google Home, giving third-party AI agents standardized access to smart home controls, camera summaries, and activity data. Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT are named as day-one integrations, alongside other agent platforms.
This moves smart home control out of single-vendor apps and into whatever agent a user already trusts for work or personal tasks. It's the first major consumer surface where competing AI labs get equal, sanctioned access to a hardware ecosystem they don't own.
Owning the home is now a distribution war, not a device war — Google just handed rivals the keys rather than lock them out, betting on ecosystem lock-in through the protocol layer instead of hardware. Expect Amazon and Apple to face pressure to open equivalent APIs or lose agent-driven usage entirely.
