Canva Craft uses a two-stage plan-then-generate architecture, pitched as cheaper and more customizable than rival image models.
Canva has released its first proprietary image generation model, Canva Craft, to all users, according to TechCrunch and The Verge. The model plans a design before generating it, a two-stage approach meant to improve control over output.
The launch puts Canva in direct competition with OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google on image generation, rather than relying solely on licensed third-party models.
Owning the model stack lets Canva control cost, latency, and differentiation instead of passing through API margins to rivals. It's a signal that design and content platforms see first-party AI as essential to defending their core business, not a nice-to-have feature.
