Amazon began blocking Meta's Muse AI agent from checking out on its site, drawing a hard line around who gets to transact on its platform.
Amazon started serving a popup to Muse users over the weekend stating that "continued access by an unauthorized AI agent" would not be permitted, effectively cutting Meta's new assistant off from Amazon.com. Amazon has no legal obligation to open its storefront to a rival's agent, and it has its own foundation models and one of the largest inference platforms in the industry to protect.
The move lands days after Meta touted Muse's early download numbers, turning what looked like a product win into a distribution fight. Any AI agent that shops on a user's behalf now has to negotiate access retailer by retailer, the same way price-comparison and coupon extensions once did.
Agentic commerce won't be won on model quality alone — it will be won or lost at the API and terms-of-service layer, where incumbents like Amazon control the checkout. Operators building shopping agents need direct merchant partnerships or their own catalog, not just a good assistant.
