The new dev tool lets PyTorch developers run AI workloads on Amazon's own chips instead of defaulting to Nvidia GPUs.
Amazon released TorchNeuron, a developer tool that lets engineers building on PyTorch — the open-source framework behind most AI apps — run their workloads on Amazon's custom silicon rather than Nvidia hardware. It's Amazon's most direct attempt yet to chip away at Nvidia's hold on the software layer where chip choices get locked in.
By targeting the framework rather than just selling chips, Amazon is trying to shift developer defaults upstream, at the point where switching costs are lowest.
Hyperscalers are tired of paying Nvidia's margins and are now attacking the software layer, not just hardware. If TorchNeuron gains adoption, it hands enterprises a real cost lever and chips away at Nvidia's pricing power.
